The Laredo SBDC travels to Zapata and Hebbronville to assist the small business community of Zapata and Jim Hogg Counties. Ms. Anna Vela, Ms. Ed. ECU BIL./ESL SP. ED & Human Science, is the owner of mama Bebe’s Pre-School Daycare. She attended one of the Laredo SBDC workshops in Hebbronville, Texas on how to prepare the payroll and payroll reports. It is here where she realized she needed in-depth assistance on how to prepare the payroll checks, quarterly reports and year-end reports.

The Laredo SBDC was able to provide one-to-one counseling and hands on training specifically on payroll. We began by reviewing the 4th quarter payroll and payroll tax deposits to instruct in the preparation of 941 Employer’s Quarterly Federal Tax Return and Texas Workforce Commission Employers Quarterly Report. In addition, instruction on the preparation of the 940 Employers Annual Federal Unemployment Tax Return was provided. It was recommended that previous quarterly reports be amended due to errors in payroll calculation.

To further assist Mrs. Vela, we created individual payroll records with formulas to help prevent errors in the calculation of payroll. We encouraged Ms. Vela to attend one a QuickBooks workshop so that she may transfer both her bookkeeping system and payroll to this program. We continue to assist Ms. Vela with by providing guidance on her specific payroll questions.
